The Quick Answer

The two policies you already have do less than you'd think. Your auto policy generally extends liability to a **towed camper only while it is hitched**, and doesn't cover the camper's own damage. Your homeowners policy gives only **limited coverage to small boats** and may not answer a liability claim on the water. A **motorhome** is a registered vehicle, so it needs at least Missouri's **25/50/25 liability** plus the **uninsured motorist coverage** Missouri requires, just like a car, and **vacation liability** is worth asking about for campground nights. **Boats, pontoons and personal watercraft**, whether you float the **Meramec River** or spend weekends at the **Lake of the Ozarks**, need their own policy. **Storage options** can keep comprehensive in force through the off-season. **Tina Gregory Agency** in Sullivan is a Farmers agency with more options through Kraft Lake: Farmers first, including Farmers family company **Foremost**, and through Kraft Lake, other companies that may fit RVs, boats and ATVs. Missouri RV & Boat Insurance, The Short Version

## Two policies you already have. Neither one really covers the toys.

Here's the guess that costs people the most: "The truck's insured and the house is insured, so the camper and the boat must be too." Your [auto policy](https://tinagregoryagency.com/auto-insurance) generally lends its liability to a trailer **only while it's hitched**. It doesn't fix the trailer itself. Your [homeowners policy](https://tinagregoryagency.com/home-insurance) gives a little coverage to small boats, and usually stops at anything with a real motor, especially once it leaves your property.

So the toys get their own coverage, matched to what they are. A **motorhome** is a vehicle and a house at once. It needs liability at or above Missouri's 25/50/25 minimum and Missouri's required uninsured motorist coverage, because it's registered like a car. It needs physical damage coverage, because it's a big investment. And **vacation liability** is worth a look for the nights you're parked at a campground. A **camper, travel trailer** or fifth wheel needs its own physical damage coverage for storms, theft and fire. A **boat or pontoon** needs its own policy too, and a good one includes **fuel spill and wreck removal**.

Missouri weather keeps things interesting. Spring brings hail, high winds and tornado warnings. Summer storms can drop a tree limb on whatever's parked under it. And the Meramec and Bourbeuse rivers have flooded to record levels more than once. That's why comprehensive on a stored rig or boat quietly earns its keep all year, and why we'd rather adjust it for storage than see you cancel it.

We actually explain the coverages to you and let you pick what works for you. We're a **Farmers agency with more than one door**: Farmers first, including Farmers family company Foremost, and other companies through Kraft Lake when Farmers isn't the best fit for a particular rig or boat. Putting it with your auto and home may lower what you pay.

## What actually covers the toys. And what quietly doesn't.

Different machines, different rules. The pattern is the same: the required part is small, and the useful part is up to you.

### Motorhome Liability

A motorhome is a registered vehicle, so it needs at least Missouri's auto liability minimum, plus the uninsured motorist coverage Missouri requires. It's worth going higher. A loaded rig on I-44 doesn't cause small accidents, and the state minimum wasn't built with that kind of weight in mind.

Strongly recommended

Comp & Collision

### Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces your rig. A lender will require it on a financed RV, and it's the only thing between hail, theft or a falling branch and your wallet. A rig parked outside through a Missouri storm season takes its chances.

Ask about this

Vacation

### Vacation Liability

Covers incidents at the campsite, where auto liability was never designed to go. The tripped hookup cord, the dog, the awning on a weekend at Meramec State Park. Some policies include a small limit, some include none, and some campgrounds ask you to carry it.

If it's home

Full-Timer

### Full-Timer's Coverage

Once the rig is where you live, a recreational policy is the wrong fit. Ask us about full-timer options that do what a homeowners policy used to do: real personal liability, guest medical, and belongings limits that match reality.

TLR

### Total Loss Replacement

The alternative to being paid depreciated value on something that loses value fast. On an eligible newer rig, where available, it replaces yours with a comparable new one instead of writing a check that doesn't pay off the loan. We'll explain how it works before you decide.

Off-season

Storage

### Storage Coverage

Ask about storage options instead of cancelling for the winter. The goal is keeping comprehensive in force against theft, fire and storm damage while the rig or boat sits from fall to spring. Cancelling can leave a gap in your insurance history.

Not covered

Unhitched

### Your Camper, Most Of The Time

Auto liability follows the camper while it's hitched and covers only what you damage. The camper itself, what's inside it, and every hour it spends parked or stored aren't your auto policy's job. This is the most common gap we find.

Not covered

Motorized

### Your Boat, On Homeowners

Homeowners gives limited coverage to small boats, usually with length and horsepower caps, and often only on your property. A canoe, maybe. A pontoon or a bass boat, usually no, and it may not answer a liability claim out on the lake at all.

Watch this

Cleanup

### Fuel Spill & Wreck Removal

If your boat sinks, getting it out can be your bill. If fuel gets into the water, the cleanup can be your bill. Neither has anything to do with what the boat was worth, so a total loss can still cost you. That's why marinas ask about them.

### Got a camper you assumed was covered?

Most people do. It takes a few minutes to find out what your auto policy actually does for it, and it's free either way.

RVs, Motorhomes, Campers & Trailers

## An RV is a vehicle and a house. Insure both halves.

That's the whole reason RV insurance is its own policy and not a line on your auto policy. Get the vehicle half wrong and you're underinsured on the road. Get the house half wrong and you're underinsured everywhere you park.

### Motorhomes versus campers

A **motorhome** is a registered motor vehicle, so Missouri's **25/50/25** liability minimum applies, the same as a car: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Missouri also requires **uninsured motorist coverage** at $25,000/$50,000. Underinsured motorist and medical payments are optional, and both are worth a conversation. Given the size and weight of a motorhome, the state minimum is a starting point, not a plan.

A **camper, travel trailer or fifth wheel** doesn't move on its own, so your tow vehicle generally covers liability while it's hitched. What people hear is "covered." What's true is "covered for one narrow thing during one narrow window." The camper's own damage, what's inside it, and every unhitched hour need coverage of their own.

### The parked half nobody prices

When the rig stops moving, it becomes a little house, and house risks show up: guests, dogs, awnings, hookups, and everything inside. **Vacation liability** handles the campsite. **Personal belongings** coverage handles the contents, and the default limit is often modest compared with what people actually bring along once you add electronics, fishing gear and tools.

If the rig **is** your home, everything changes. A **full-timer's policy** is the right fit because there's no homeowners policy standing behind you anymore. Plenty of people who sell the house and hit the road never switch off the weekend policy they started with.

### Camping season, Route 66 trips, and the months after

Most rigs around Sullivan stay busy from spring through fall, with weekends at Meramec State Park, a run down historic Route 66, or a week at the Lake of the Ozarks. Then they sit for the winter. Plan for both halves. On the road, make sure liability and vacation liability are real limits. In storage, keep comprehensive in force, winterize the plumbing, and tell us where the rig is kept. A storage building, a gravel lot and your own driveway aren't the same risk to an insurance company.

Boats, Pontoons, PWC & ATVs

## River floats and lake weekends. Insured like you mean it.

There's a lot of water close to Sullivan. The Meramec and Bourbeuse rivers are right here for float trips and fishing, and the Lake of the Ozarks is an easy drive for a pontoon weekend. Whatever you launch, it's worth knowing what covers it. A canoe or kayak may get some limited coverage under your homeowners policy, usually with caps. Add a motor, and that coverage often shrinks or goes away. A jon boat with an outboard, or anything you trailer to the river, usually belongs on its own boat policy. The liability side matters most. If someone gets hurt on your boat, or your boat damages someone else's, you want a policy built for the water.

### Who actually sets the requirements

**Marinas** commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a dock or slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Bring us the dock agreement and we'll match it. **Lenders** require physical damage coverage on a financed boat and will want to be listed as loss payee.

The other half has nothing to do with paperwork. If your boat sinks, **wreck removal** can be your responsibility. If fuel gets out, **environmental cleanup** can be your responsibility. Neither bill is capped by what the boat was worth. So "it's an old boat, it's not worth insuring" is a gamble, not a budget decision.

### Pontoons and family boats

Pontoons are built for a crowd: kids, grandparents, friends and the dog. That's a lot of people on board, so **liability and medical payments** deserve real limits. Ask about coverage for the trailer, the motor, and gear like electronics, tubes and fishing equipment, and about **uninsured boater** coverage in case the other boat has none.

### Winter storage

From fall to spring, most boats around here sit on a trailer, in a shed or on a lift. Many boat policies offer a storage or lay-up period, and comprehensive can stay in force for theft, fire and storm damage while the boat sits. Many policies also expect proper winterization, so ask us how yours handles freeze damage to the engine before the first hard freeze.

### Jet skis, ATVs, and the rest of the garage

**Personal watercraft** deserve more respect than they get. They're fast, and they're often handed to a friend who has never driven one, which means a lot of liability for the price of the machine.

**ATVs, UTVs and side-by-sides** need their own coverage too. Your homeowners policy generally won't respond once they leave your property, and sometimes not even on it. Coverage can handle trail liability, theft and the trailer itself. Foremost, a Farmers family company, is well known for this kind of coverage and may be a good fit. Tell us where you actually ride, because your own land, a riding park and a public trail aren't the same risk. Street bikes belong on a [motorcycle policy](https://tinagregoryagency.com/motorcycle-insurance).

## RV, boat & recreational questions. Straight answers.

Is RV insurance required in Missouri?

For a motorhome, yes. It's a registered motor vehicle, so it needs at least the same 25/50/25 liability Missouri requires on a car: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage at $25,000/$50,000.

Underinsured motorist and medical payments are optional, and both are worth considering on a rig. Given how much a motorhome weighs, the minimum is a floor, not a plan. Towed campers work differently. See the next question.

Doesn't my auto policy already cover my camper or travel trailer?

Only for one narrow thing during one narrow window: while it's hitched, your tow vehicle's liability generally extends to the trailer.

The camper's own damage, like hail, wind, theft from the storage lot or fire, isn't covered by your auto policy, hitched or not. A camper, travel trailer or fifth wheel needs its own coverage, and most owners find that out at claim time.

What is vacation liability, and do I need it?

Your motorhome's auto-style liability is built for driving. Vacation liability fills the gap while you're parked and staying in it: the campfire that spreads, or the guest who trips on the step at a state park campsite.

Some policies include a small default limit, some include none, and some campgrounds ask for it. If you spend real nights in the rig, it's worth carrying on purpose.

Do I need a full-timer's policy?

If the RV is where you live, ask us about it.

Full-timer coverage is designed to do the jobs a homeowners policy used to do: broader personal liability, medical payments for guests, and personal property limits that reflect that everything you own is inside. A weekend policy on a full-time rig can lead to an ugly surprise at claim time.

If my RV is totaled, what does the policy actually pay?

It depends on which valuation you chose. Actual cash value pays depreciated worth.

Agreed value pays a number you locked in. Total loss replacement, where available on eligible newer rigs, replaces yours with a comparable new one. On a financed rig, that choice can decide whether the payout covers the loan.

Should I cancel my RV or boat policy over the winter?

Usually not. The off-season in Missouri means months of the rig or boat parked and unattended through ice, wind, storms and the occasional break-in.

Comprehensive is what answers theft, fire, storm and falling-tree damage to something in storage. Ask about storage options that keep comprehensive in force while it sits. That's usually a better answer than cancelling, which can also leave a gap in your insurance history.

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat, canoe or kayak?

Barely. Homeowners policies give limited coverage to small boats, usually with length and horsepower caps, and often only on your property.

A canoe or kayak, maybe. A pontoon or anything with a real motor, usually no. The liability side is the bigger gap, because a homeowners policy may not answer a claim out on the water at all. We'll look at your policy with you.

Do marinas or lenders require boat insurance?

Often, yes. Marinas commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a dock or slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Lenders require physical damage coverage on a financed boat and want to be listed as loss payee.

Bring us the dock agreement or loan paperwork and we'll match the policy to it.

What does boat insurance cover on the Meramec River or the Lake of the Ozarks?

A boat or pontoon policy typically covers physical damage to the hull, motor and trailer, liability for injuring someone or damaging their property on the water, medical payments, and uninsured boater coverage.

Ask about fuel spill liability and wreck removal too. Tell us where you actually boat, river or lake, and we'll make sure the coverage fits how you use it.

What are fuel spill liability and wreck removal?

If your boat sinks or burns, you can be responsible for raising the wreck and cleaning up the fuel, and neither bill is small.

Fuel spill liability and wreck removal coverage answer for exactly that, which is why marinas often ask about them. Neither is tied to what the boat was worth, so they matter even on an older boat.

Do I need insurance for a jet ski or personal watercraft?

Practically, yes. Lenders and many marinas require it, and personal watercraft are fast and often handed to a friend who has never driven one.

That's a lot of liability for the price of the machine. We can quote it alongside your boat, RV and auto.

What about ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides?

They need their own coverage too. Once they leave your property, your homeowners policy generally won't respond, and sometimes not even on it.

Coverage can handle trail liability, theft, physical damage and the trailer hauling them. Tell us what you ride and where. We'll look at Farmers first, including Farmers family company Foremost, and other companies through Kraft Lake that may be a good fit for off-road toys.
