Maybe you drive I-44 toward the St. Louis area every weekday. Maybe your mornings are MO-185 and a gravel road, or you just added a teenager and a second pickup to the policy. Whatever your routine, the car insurance that fits a Sullivan household looks a little different from the one in a national TV ad.

Missouri law sets the floor, the same here as anywhere in the state. What’s local is the risk on top of it: deer at dusk, spring hail, the Meramec in flood and a lot of highway miles. Here’s what’s required, which coverage handles those losses, what drives your price and how to quote with our office.

What car insurance do you need to drive in Sullivan, MO?

The short answer: Missouri’s statewide rules apply here: liability of at least 25/50/25, uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000/$50,000 and proof of insurance in the car.

Sullivan sits on the line between Franklin and Crawford counties, but there’s no city or county car insurance rule to learn. RSMo 303.190 sets the liability minimum. In plain English: $25,000 for one person’s injuries, $50,000 for everyone’s injuries in one accident and $25,000 for damage to other people’s property. The Missouri Department of Revenue lists the same limits on its insurance requirements page, along with the required uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident (RSMo 379.203).

Underinsured motorist (UIM) and medical payments coverage are optional, and there’s no personal injury protection (PIP) requirement. Missouri is an at-fault, comparative fault state. Keep proof of insurance in the car. The Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance (revised June 2021) says you can show it on your phone.

Good to knowWant the full statewide picture? Our Missouri car insurance guide covers every coverage, the penalties for driving uninsured and how the limits fit together. This page sticks to what changes around Sullivan.

How do Sullivan’s roads change the coverage worth carrying?

The short answer: Interstate miles, two-lane highways and gravel roads all add exposure, so your liability and uninsured motorist limits deserve more thought than the legal minimum gives them.

Sullivan is where I-44 meets MO-185, along the historic Route 66 corridor. For a lot of households here, a week mixes interstate traffic and heavy trucks with two-lane roads and gravel.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts puts the average commute for Sullivan workers at 21.8 minutes (2020–2024 American Community Survey estimates). One driver stays in town; another heads up I-44 every morning.

Two things follow. First, liability limits. A serious interstate crash can involve several injured people and a newer vehicle, and 25/50/25 can run out fast. Anything above your limits can come out of your pocket. An umbrella policy can add a layer above your auto and home liability.

Second, the uninsured and underinsured motorist lines. The Insurance Research Council estimated that 20.7% of Missouri drivers were uninsured in 2023, sixth highest in the country (via the Insurance Information Institute). UIM, which is optional, covers the driver who has insurance, just not enough. We’d price both at higher limits before you decide.

What happens if you hit a deer near Sullivan?

The short answer: Damage to your car from hitting a deer is usually covered by comprehensive, which is optional in Missouri, after your comprehensive deductible.

2,951
traffic crashes in Missouri involved deer-vehicle strikes in 2024, with four people killed and 420 injured. Most happen October through December, with the most in November. Source: Missouri State Highway Patrol, news release, October 9, 2025.

The Highway Patrol says most strikes happen between 8 and 9 p.m., and that streams and wooded corridors surrounded by farmland can increase crossings. That describes a lot of the country around Sullivan.

In a November 2017 consumer release, DCI said damage from a collision with an animal is covered under an auto policy’s optional comprehensive coverage, and its current consumer guide lists animals among the things comprehensive pays for. If you carry only liability, or collision without comprehensive, the repair is on you.

MoDOT’s advice is not to swerve, because you can lose control. It can change the claim, too. Hitting the deer is usually comprehensive; leaving the road and hitting a tree or a ditch is usually collision, with its own deductible.

Illustrative example · not a quote You hit a deer on MO-185 at dusk in November, and the repair estimate for the front end is $4,000.
  • With comprehensive and a $500 deductible, you pay the first $500, and the policy pays the rest of the covered repair, subject to its terms.
  • With liability only, the policy pays nothing toward your car, and the whole $4,000 is yours.
Made-up numbers to show how a deductible works; yours will differ.

Does car insurance cover hail and Meramec flood damage?

The short answer: Yes, if you carry comprehensive, because hail and flood water are comprehensive losses on an auto policy, and a flood policy on your home doesn’t cover your cars.

Spring storms bring hail, and a car parked outside takes the hit. DCI’s guide lists hail and flood among the losses comprehensive covers, along with theft, vandalism, fire and animals.

Then there’s the river. In late December 2015, the Bourbeuse and Meramec set new record crests at gauges from Union to Arnold, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, and the Meramec rose again in spring 2017. On April 30, 2017, the same NWS office forecast record flooding on the Meramec near Sullivan, with a crest near 36.6 feet against a flood stage of 11 feet (NWS flood statement, archived by Iowa State University).

A flood policy, NFIP or private, covers the house and what’s in it, not your vehicles. A car caught at a flooded low-water crossing is a comprehensive claim on your auto policy, if you carry it. Our flood insurance page and our storm, flood and sinkhole playbook cover the home side.

Coverage types from DCI’s Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance (revised June 2021); how glass is handled varies by policy. Every claim depends on your policy’s terms.

What drives the price of car insurance in Sullivan?

The short answer: There’s no reliable published average for Sullivan, so your price comes down to your drivers, vehicles, driving and claims history, where the cars are kept, your miles and the coverage you choose.

We haven’t found a source we trust for a Sullivan-only price, so we won’t give you one. The most reliable figures are statewide: the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) put Missouri’s 2022 average expenditure at $991.50 per insured vehicle, against $1,126.94 countrywide (NAIC 2022 Average Premium Supplement). The NAIC itself says direct comparisons between states “should be treated with a high degree of caution,” and prices have moved since then. Treat it as background, not a quote.

DCI’s guide lists the factors insurers use. These tend to matter most here:

Location

Where the cars are kept

DCI lists “where you live and who you live with.” Your ZIP and garaging address are part of every quote.

Use

Miles and commute

Vehicle use, including annual mileage. A daily I-44 commute and a car that stays in town can price differently.

Record

Driving and claims history

Tickets, at-fault crashes and past claims can raise the price. A clean record works in your favor.

Vehicle

Make, model and year

What it costs to repair or replace shapes your collision and comprehensive price.

History

Lapses and credit

Prior lapses in coverage count, and DCI notes insurers may use a credit-based insurance score.

Coverage

Your choices

Liability, UM and UIM limits, optional coverages and deductibles all move the price.

Some factors can work in your favor. The sample declarations page in DCI’s guide lists discounts such as multiple vehicles, home and auto together and paying in full, and you may qualify for others based on your driving record or occupation. Eligibility varies, and discounts aren’t available in every situation. For more ways to bring the price down without leaving gaps, read how to lower the price of car insurance in Missouri.

Should a Sullivan homeowner with several cars bundle home and auto?

The short answer: It’s worth pricing, because bundling home and auto may lower the price and keeps both policies with one local office, as long as you compare at the same coverage.

A lot of the households we talk to own a home and more than one car. That household has the most to protect, so it’s worth looking at both policies together:

  • Match liability to what you own. The home equity and savings a lawsuit could reach don’t care which policy the claim starts on.
  • Look at an umbrella. A teen driver, several vehicles or a rental property are common reasons to price one.
  • Line up deductibles on purpose. A spring hailstorm can damage the roof and the cars in the driveway in the same afternoon, and each policy has its own deductible.

Our guide to home insurance in Sullivan covers the house side, and our home insurance page explains how we quote it.

How do you get a car insurance quote from our Sullivan office?

The short answer: Call Tina or Matthew at (573) 358-4513 (Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Central), stop by 878 Dunsford Dr or start the quote form online, and bring your declarations page.

Call (573) 358-4513 and ask for Tina Gregory or Matthew Tolliver, who was born and raised in Sullivan. Most quotes can be handled by phone. You can also stop by 878 Dunsford Dr, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central (closed weekends), or start our auto quote form any time and a licensed agent will follow up during business hours. Have these ready:

  1. Your current declarations page

It lists your drivers, vehicles, coverages, limits and deductibles, so every change from it is on purpose.

  2. Drivers, vehicles and miles

Each driver’s date of birth and license number (the new teen too), each VIN or year, make and model, where the cars are kept overnight and a rough idea of annual miles.

  3. Tickets, crashes and claims

A quote isn’t final until the insurer checks your record. Mentioning the ticket from two years ago now makes a price change later less likely.

  4. Your lender and home policy

A lender will usually require collision and comprehensive, and your home policy lets us price a bundle.

Here’s how we work. We’re a Farmers agency, so we start with Farmers. When Farmers isn’t the best fit, we can also quote other companies through Kraft Lake Insurance Agency. Either way, we actually explain the coverages to you and let you pick what works for you. More on our auto insurance page and Sullivan office page.

The bottom line on car insurance in Sullivan

Missouri sets the minimum: 25/50/25 liability plus $25,000/$50,000 of uninsured motorist coverage. Around Sullivan, the coverage that does the most work sits on top: comprehensive for deer, hail and high water, and liability and UIM limits that fit your miles and what you own.

Call Tina or Matthew at (573) 358-4513, Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 Central, or stop by 878 Dunsford Dr. Bring your declarations page and we’ll go through it line by line, then quote the coverage you actually want. You can also start a free auto quote online.

Sullivan car insurance FAQ

What car insurance is required in Sullivan, MO?

Sullivan follows Missouri’s statewide rules. Under RSMo 303.190, every vehicle needs liability coverage of at least $25,000 for one person’s injuries, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage, often written 25/50/25. Missouri also requires uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. Underinsured motorist and medical payments coverage are optional, and there’s no PIP requirement. The minimum is a legal floor, and most households with a home or savings carry more.

Does car insurance cover hitting a deer in Missouri?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage. In a November 2017 consumer release, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance said damage from a collision with an animal is covered under an auto policy’s optional comprehensive coverage. Your deductible applies. Liability alone won’t pay to fix your own car. If you swerve and hit a tree or end up in a ditch instead, that is usually a collision claim. The Missouri State Highway Patrol counted 2,951 deer-related crashes statewide in 2024, most of them from October through December.

Does car insurance cover hail or flood damage to my car?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive. The Department of Commerce and Insurance consumer guide lists hail and flood among the losses comprehensive covers, along with theft, vandalism, fire and animals. Your comprehensive deductible applies. A flood insurance policy on your home, whether through the NFIP or a private company, doesn’t cover vehicles, so a car caught in rising water near the Meramec or Bourbeuse is a claim on your auto policy, not your flood policy.

How much does car insurance cost in Sullivan, MO?

We haven’t found a reliable published average for Sullivan alone, so the honest answer is that it depends on you. Insurers look at your drivers, vehicles, driving and claims history, where the cars are kept, how many miles you drive, any lapse in coverage, a credit-based insurance score where it’s used, and the limits and deductibles you choose. Discounts for things like insuring more than one car or bundling home and auto may apply; eligibility varies. A quote at the same coverage is the only real comparison.

Can I get a quote from the Sullivan office without coming in?

Yes. Most quotes can be handled by phone. Call (573) 358-4513 Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central, and ask for Tina Gregory or Matthew Tolliver. You can also start the online quote form any time, and a licensed agent will follow up during business hours. If you’d rather sit down in person, the office is at 878 Dunsford Dr in Sullivan. Either way, we’ll explain the coverages and let you pick what works for you.
